How families approach this

There is no good guidance for writing this inscription. There are only patterns families have used and found bearable. The lines that work tend to be very short — three or four words that hold the relationship without trying to summarise a life. Long inscriptions almost always feel wrong on the stone of a young person; the longer the inscription, the louder the absence reads.

Each of the lines below has been used on real American memorial stones. They’re short enough to sandblast cleanly at a 1.5-inch cap height, and they pair with a standard name and date layout.

  • Our beloved son.
  • Forever our boy.
  • Loved more than words can say.
  • Our brightest light.
  • A son — a brother — a friend.
  • Too soon, deeply loved.
  • Our heart will always be with you.
  • Loved every day of your life and beyond.

Finding the right voice

Two patterns recur. The first is a single short relationship phrase — "Our beloved son," "Forever our boy," "A son, a brother, a friend." The second is a phrase about how he was loved rather than what he did — "Loved more than words can say," "Our heart will always be with you." Resist the temptation to inventory accomplishments. The stone is for the people who already remember; they do not need to be reminded of who he was.

Common pitfalls

The most common pitfall is writing in the immediate aftermath. Inscriptions written within the first thirty days of a loss are far more likely to be regretted later — they tend to express grief instead of memory, and the family encounters the line again at every visit. If the second-date inscription can wait three months, it almost always should. The cemetery is patient.
